The RCGP has made autistic spectrum disorders a clinical priority for the years 2014 to 2017.
It plans to enhance autism awareness within the primary care workforce and improve the healthcare experiences of people on the autistic spectrum.
In May 2016 the RCGP produced an information pack for GPs (please click here for a copy). It explains autism and how to create an autism friendly service.
The pack includes a Patient Charter which explains how GPs can make reasonable adjustments to ensure that their practice is accessible to people on the autistic spectrum.
Austin Thornton of the health & care team at Wrigleys said: "We welcome initiatives such as this from the RCGP. But the fact there is an ongoing systemic failure to provide services for this vulnerable group. In our experience, a huge challenge remains the lack of appropriate social services provision. The resources issue that blocks this development has to be addressed."
