KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Governance today and for the future

Keynote speaker: Sally Stephens, governance consultant, NCVO

Trustees and senior leaders are presented with challenges and difficult choices every day. With a cost of living crisis on the horizon, many boards will be having discussions which feel like they have very few outcomes. Should we be increasing staff salaries at the expense of external programmes, or focussing on keeping the lights on and setting long-term strategy to one side? These decisions are of-the-moment and will have an enormous impact on our communities, but the need to make difficult decisions isn’t new in charity leadership. As we look to the future, what frameworks do we need in place to make sure our organisations are equipped to take forward sound decisions in the best way possible?

As part of the talk I’ll touch on some of the most pressing issues decision-makers are facing (including the cost of living crisis), and then think about how structures like the Charity Governance Code (which is due for a review next year) can support trustees and senior staff.

LUNCH WITH OPPORTUNITY FOR NETWORKING

13:00 - 14:00 BREAKOUT SESSION

Please select which breakout you would like to attend

Breakout 1A: “Trouble at t’mill” – what to do when differences of opinion start to take over

Speakers: Clare Lawrence & Sue King, partners, at Wrigleys Solicitors & Ben Peck, director of Diddu Communications

It’s unrealistic to think that those involved in a charity (trustees, members, volunteers, staff) will all get on 100% of the time. However, when tensions between (or within) these groups start to detract from the mission of the charity and take up a significant amount of time, resource and energy then this needs to be addressed in order for the charity to get back on track. In this session we will look at steps you can take to try and prevent disagreements and difference of opinions getting out of hand, as well as what steps you can take when things are beyond the point of no return. Wrigleys will look at this from a charity governance and employment law aspect and we are delighted to be joined by Ben Peck of Diddu Communications who will provide insight on how to manage things from a communications perspective with a good dash of empathy and insight into how we react and respond as human beings.

Breakout 1B: Embracing digital - adapting governance to reflect decision-making in the digital age

Speakers: Joanna Blackman and Daniel Lewis, solicitors at Wrigleys Solicitors

The ‘digital revolution’ of the past few years has provided new opportunities to improve charity governance.  In this session we will be exploring the importance of becoming comfortable with digital, as well as identifying areas of risk and offering some digital tips for making key principles of governance easier and more effective.

14:05 - 15:05 Breakout session

Breakout 2A: ESG (environmental, social and governance)

Speakers: Laura Moss, partner, and Sophie Henson, solicitor at Wrigleys Solicitors

Charities are increasingly keen to demonstrate their ESG (environmental, social and governance) credentials. This session takes a look at what ESG might mean for trustees and their charities.

Breakout 2B: Charities Act 2022

Speakers: Nat Johnson, partner, and Hayley Marsden, solicitor at Wrigleys Solicitors

The Charities Act 2022 received Royal Assent in February 2022, and is intended to come into force in stages between Autumn 2022 and Autumn 2023. This sessions explores some of the key changes to the Charities Act 2011 and the implications for charities presented by the new legislation.
